unfoldings: a sophomore design studio
Within the third DEA studio, projects revolve around designing multi-dimensional spatial experiences, working in varying scales and media. We will train ourselves to be particularly conscious of one’s perception of space, and to explore the notion of the body moving through space. As designers, we will be asked to become more aware of spatial manipulations, and the contexts and histories and meanings that underlie and give voice to the human experience.
Our studio space is a “thought lab” both collaborative and individual in nature. Our studio is an environment of exploration and experimentation. We have been challenged to think and present critically, explore concepts, and engage with our colleagues.
It is not only the solution that is important--rather, it is an understanding of the process that will enrich your growth as an innovative thinker and designer.

our story
light + paper
maximum extents: 15” x 15” x 15” spatial volume
construction materials: white paper media + binding substance/glue
construct a paper element that explores the materiality of the medium and plays on the light
source (given). a minimum of 12 iterations should be generated and evaluated throughout the process.
this is not a lamp. rather, think of this as purely a study on light and
material and its inherent properties...

water + light + space
maximum extents:
15’ x 15’ x 15’ spatial volume
since the beginnings of human history, we have placed high regard upon the notions of light
and water...
whether as mythical concepts of weather and deities, to their more contemporary
counterparts of solar energy and water commodification, water and light have been core to
our progress and being.
design a “pavilion space of passage and dwelling” within a 15’ cube volume.
this pavilion shall utilize both the elements of light and water in space through an intriguing
perspective. how to specifically address and utilize these elements within your project is
purposefully left vague for further studio explorations, research, and discussion

Current projects include the new headquarters for China Rail in Shanghai, the new CBTG building in NYC; and Millbrid Hall – an extension of the College of Architecture in Blue University in London.
